A gate looks like one object, but it isn’t. It’s a frame, a set of infill pieces, a hinge or track side, and a lot of hardware hanging off all of it. Each part asks something different from the metal.
That is why the first question to ask your aluminium gate profiles supplier isn’t “what’s your rate?” It’s “which section goes where?” At Bahubali Aluminium Co., we’ve supplied fabricators from our Paharganj counter for over 25 years. The gates that come back for repair almost always have the same story: the right material, but the wrong section in the wrong place.
This guide is about that choice. If you’re still comparing shops, we’ve covered that separately in our checklist for choosing among aluminium gate suppliers in Delhi. Here we’ll stay on the sections themselves.
Why aluminium gate profiles behave differently from steel
Aluminium weighs roughly a third of mild steel, and it doesn’t rust. For Delhi’s monsoon, that’s the whole appeal. But two things catch people out:
- It is less stiff than steel. The same size of tube will flex more. So you compensate with wall thickness, section depth or a better layout, not by hoping.
- It expands more with heat. Over a 3-metre run, a swing of about 40°C can move the metal by close to 3 mm. That’s why joints and fixings on a south-facing gate in May need a little room to breathe.
None of this is a drawback. It just means aluminium gate profiles reward a bit of planning.
Match the profile to the part of the gate
The outer frame
This carries the load, so it gets your heaviest section. Most fabricators use a box section (square or rectangular tube) for the frame. A deeper section resists sag better than a thicker but shallow one, which surprises many people. If your gate is wide, go deeper first.
You can browse the tubes we stock on our architectural tubes page.
The infill
Vertical bars, slats, flat bars or decorative panels fill the space between the frame members. These carry less structural load, so a lighter section is usually fine. This is also where design happens. Slim verticals give a clean modern look, while wider slats give more privacy.
Angles and channels
Angles are handy for corners, stops and stiffening. Channels help with sliding gates and for tidy edges. Our aluminium angles range covers the common sizes.
A quick comparison
| Gate type | Frame section | Infill | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swing (single leaf, residential) | Medium box section | Light bars or slats | Hinge-side sag over time |
| Sliding (wide driveway) | Heavy, deeper box or channel | Light to medium | Track alignment and rigidity |
| Slatted / privacy gate | Medium box section | Flat slats | Extra weight from closely spaced slats |
| Decorative / pedestrian | Light to medium | Decorative | Finish matters more than strength |
These are general starting points, not engineering drawings. For wide or heavy gates, your fabricator should confirm section sizes and wall thickness.
Wall thickness and weight: the part people skip
“Heavy” and “light” mean different things in different shops, so ask for the wall thickness in millimetres and the weight per metre. Two sections that look identical on the counter can differ a lot in wall thickness, and that difference decides how the gate behaves after two summers.
A simple rule we share with fabricators: if the gate carries add-ons (a nameplate, a lock box, an intercom, an automatic opener) step up your frame section. Extra weight on the hinge side is where most sagging begins.
Finish: where Delhi’s weather does its work
Between the dust in March, the heat in May and the humidity in July, a gate’s finish takes more punishment than its structure. Powder coating is the common choice for outdoor gates here, and for good reason: it holds colour and edges better than basic paint.
Two practical tips:
- Ask to see a finished sample piece, not just a shade card.
- If you need a matching colour later, buy a little extra now. Shades can vary slightly between batches.
We go deeper on this in our guide to powder coated aluminium profiles.
Four mistakes we see again and again
Using the same section everywhere. A frame-grade tube used for light infill wastes money. A light section used in the frame sags.
Ignoring the hinge side. The leaf pulls hardest there. Reinforce it.
Cutting and welding without allowing for movement. Tight fixings in a hot gate can distort over time.
Choosing the supplier last. The section you want should decide the supplier, not the other way round. A good aluminium gate profiles supplier will tell you what suits your span, even if it means selling you something cheaper.
How to brief your supplier (so you get the right sections the first time)
Carry this with you:
- Gate type: swing, sliding or decorative
- Approximate width and height
- Any add-ons: opener, nameplate, intercom
- Preferred finish and colour
- Whether you’re matching an existing gate
With that, a supplier can usually point you to the right section in a few minutes. For gate-specific options, see our Gate & Louvers Profiles range, or read our earlier note on what we stock for fabricators.
Who this is for in Delhi NCR
Most of our customers are fabricators, builders and contractors working across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. Homeowners are welcome too. Many arrive with a photo of the gate they want, and we help translate it into sections their fabricator can actually use.
You’ll find us at G-12 Pushpa Complex, D.B. Gupta Road, Paharganj, New Delhi.
Frequently asked questions
What size aluminium section is best for a main gate?
It depends on width, weight and add-ons. A medium box section often suits a standard residential swing gate, while wider gates need deeper or heavier sections. Confirm with your fabricator before ordering.
Are aluminium gate profiles strong enough for a sliding gate?
Yes, with the right design. Sliding gates need deeper sections, a rigid frame and a well-aligned track. Don’t choose the lightest section just to save weight.
Do I need powder coated aluminium gate profiles?
For outdoor gates in Delhi, we recommend it. It protects against dust, heat and monsoon humidity better than basic painting.
Can I buy profiles for just one gate?
Yes. Small orders for one or two gates are normal for us.
Can a supplier match an older gate section?
Often, yes, especially when you bring a small cut sample. Matching is much faster with a physical piece.
