Powder Coated Aluminium Profiles: How to Pick a Finish That Survives Delhi’s Heat, Dust and Monsoon

Every summer, a few fabricators walk into our Paharganj shop with the same complaint. A gate or railing installed a couple of years ago has started to look chalky, and the colour has faded unevenly. Nine times out of ten, the aluminium itself is fine. The finish was the problem.

After more than 25 years in this trade, I can say that the coating decides how an aluminium job looks in year five. This guide covers what powder coated aluminium profiles are, how the finish is applied, and what to check before you place an order in Delhi NCR.

What Are Powder Coated Aluminium Profiles?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process. A fine polyester or similar powder is electrostatically sprayed onto a cleaned aluminium section, then baked in an oven. The powder melts, flows and cures into a hard, even skin.

Because there is no liquid solvent, the finish is thicker and tougher than ordinary paint. It also gives you a huge colour choice: matt, gloss, textured, metallic, and wood-grain effects.

The finish is only as good as the metal under it. A badly extruded section with surface lines will show those lines through the coat, however good the powder is.

Powder Coating vs Anodising: Which One Should You Choose?

This is the question I hear most often from architects.

Powder coatingAnodising
Colour rangePractically unlimited (RAL shades, textures, wood finish)Limited: silver, bronze, black, champagne
LookPainted, uniform surfaceMetallic, natural aluminium look
Outdoor durabilityGood with the right powder and pre-treatmentVery good, no peeling risk
Touch-upVisible if a scratch goes throughHarder to repair
Best forGates, railings, louvers, windows, facadesPremium interiors, minimal metallic looks

Neither is “better” in every case. If the client wants a particular colour to match a building, powder coating is usually the practical answer. If they want a natural metallic look with the least maintenance, anodising makes sense.

Why the Finish Matters More in Delhi

Delhi is hard on exterior aluminium. Three things work against the finish:

  • Summer heat. Surface temperatures in direct sun go well beyond the air temperature, and cheap powders fade or go chalky.
  • Dust and pollution. Fine particles settle on surfaces and, with repeated cleaning, can dull a weak coating.
  • Monsoon humidity. If pre-treatment was skipped, moisture finds its way under the coating and it starts to lift at cut edges.

That is why I always tell buyers in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad to ask about the powder type (polyester for exteriors) and the pre-treatment process, not just the colour.

What to Check Before You Buy

You can’t judge a powder coated section by looking at a single piece under shop lights. These are the checks that actually matter.

1. Pre-treatment. The aluminium should be degreased and chemically treated (chromate or chrome-free) before the powder goes on. Skipping this is the number one reason for peeling.

2. Coating thickness. For exterior work, a thickness in the range of roughly 60 to 80 microns is commonly expected. Ask the supplier what they apply and whether they can show a test reading.

3. Powder type. Standard polyester powders suit most exterior jobs. If the project is a high-rise facade or sits near heavy exposure, ask about higher-durability grades.

4. Cure quality. Under-baked powder looks fine on day one but scratches easily. A simple rub with a cloth and a light fingernail scratch test tells you a lot.

5. Batch consistency. For a large project, colour should match across every length. Always order the full quantity in one go and ask for a sample from the same batch.

6. Section quality underneath. Check wall thickness, straightness and extrusion lines. Good coating can’t hide a weak profile.

Where Powder Coated Aluminium Profiles Are Used

The finish is available across almost every profile type, which is why architects specify it so often.

Gates and railings. A good aluminium gate profiles supplier will stock sections designed for gate frames, and a reliable aluminium railing profile supplier will offer matching posts and handrails in the same colour. For balconies and staircases, a glass railing aluminium profile in a matt black or dark grey finish is currently one of the most requested combinations.

Louvers and facades. Looking for aluminium louvers manufacturers in Delhi, or a facade profile supplier in Delhi? Colour consistency over a long wall is critical. Louver blades and curtain wall sections with the same powder batch keep the elevation looking uniform.

Windows and doors. Aluminium window sections in Delhi and aluminium door profiles are usually coated in white, black, grey or a wood-grain effect. If you are choosing for doors specifically, our guide to aluminium door profiles suppliers covers that side in detail.

Domal systems. Many fabricators in Delhi work with Domal aluminium sections for sliding and casement windows, partitions and doors. Finish options on these systems are what let a fabricator match a client’s interior scheme.

Structural and utility sections. Items such as an aluminium U profile, angles and channels are often left mill finish, but powder coating them is common when they stay visible. If you need these, see our post on the aluminium channel supplier in Delhi.

Solar structures. Aluminium solar profiles are typically anodised or mill finish, because the priority is corrosion resistance rather than colour.

A Few Mistakes I See Again and Again

Over the years, a pattern shows up in complaints:

  • Buyers choose purely on price per kg and don’t ask about coating thickness.
  • Profiles are cut and drilled after coating, leaving bare edges that are never touched up. Moisture enters here first.
  • Cleaning with harsh acids or abrasive pads, which dulls the surface.
  • Mixing profiles coated in different batches on one elevation.
  • Leaving finished profiles in open stacks near construction sites, where cement dust and splashes damage the film.

None of this is complicated, but it does take a little discipline on the job site.

How to Care for Powder Coated Aluminium

Maintenance is easy. Wash the surface with mild soap and water every few months, using a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid solvents and scouring pads. In Delhi, a quick wash after the dusty pre-monsoon weeks keeps the finish looking fresh. If a deep scratch appears, touch it up promptly so moisture doesn’t creep underneath.

Sourcing Powder Coated Profiles in Delhi

If you search for an aluminium section manufacturer in Delhi or compare aluminium profile manufacturers in Delhi, you will find plenty of options, and it is easy to get lost in them. Ask each one the same questions: what pre-treatment do they use, what thickness do they apply, can they match a RAL shade, and can they supply the same batch for a full project?

At Bahubali Aluminium Co., we supply architectural aluminium profiles in Delhi, India with a range of powder-coated colours, and our team will happily walk you through shades and sections before you commit. Whether you are sourcing an aluminium angle supplier in Delhi, a curtain wall section supplier, or looking for a trusted aluminium grill supplier in Delhi, the finish questions above apply the same way.

Final Thoughts

A powder coated profile can look excellent for many years in Delhi’s climate, but only when the pre-treatment, coating thickness and curing were done properly. Ask the right questions at the start, and you will avoid expensive rework later.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long does a powder coated aluminium profile last outdoors?
It depends on the powder grade, pre-treatment and exposure. Properly applied exterior-grade polyester powder generally performs well for many years, and regular washing helps extend that.

2. Can I get custom colours?
Yes. Most RAL shades and several textured and wood-grain finishes are possible, though some need minimum order quantities.

3. Is powder coating better than paint on aluminium?
In most architectural uses, yes. It forms a thicker, harder film and is generally more resistant to chipping and weathering.

4. Will powder coated profiles rust?
Aluminium does not rust like steel. Poor coating can still peel or show white oxidation at damaged edges, so touch up cut ends.

5. Which is better for balcony railings, powder coating or anodising?
Both work. Powder coating gives more colour freedom, while anodising gives a natural metallic look.
